42nd Street NE from I-380 to Wenig Road NE

CLIENT: CITY OF CEDAR RAPIDS

Project Description: Anderson Bogert provided design, surveying, construction administration, and public involvement services for this Paving for Progress Project. 42nd Street NE from I-380 to Wenig Road NE is a quarter-mile long arterial roadway that serves over 14,000 vehicles per day and includes both commuter and school traffic. Due to this, significant focus was placed on stakeholder communications and construction staging.

Early on in the process, it was clear that construction needed to be staged around the school calendar. When school was in session, a minimum of one-way traffic was maintained. After summer dismissal, the roadway was closed to traffic, detours were in place, and non-local traffic was discouraged. Throughout the project, construction was staged such that private driveway access was maintained as much as possible.

Project improvements for 42nd Street NE from I-380 to Wenig Road NE included: pavement reconstruction, bike lane additions, sanitary sewer repairs, storm sewer replacement, water main replacement, and pedestrian accommodation improvements, including wider sidewalks and the installation of a High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) Beacon. The HAWK Beacon replaced an existing signalized crosswalk and was relocated closer to the mid-block of Marilyn Drive and Meadow Lane to improve pedestrian safety near Pierce Elementary School. In addition, traffic signal improvements were made at Wenig Road and the I-380 southbound ramps. The project was completed under budget and on schedule in October 2016.
