42nd Street and I-380 Intersection

CLIENT: CITY OF CEDAR RAPIDS

Project Description: This project was a joint project between the City of Cedar Rapids, Iowa DOT, and the Canadian National (CN) Railroad to improve an existing trail crossing of 42nd Street at the confluence of the I-380 northbound interchange ramp and the crossing of the CN Railroad tracks. In addition to using an STP Grant for construction, Federal Rail Crossing dollars were included in the project to add gates at the railroad crossing. The project addressed poor vehicle capacity at the existing signalized intersection, awkward geometry of the existing Cedar River Trail crossing, added bicycle lanes, and corrected issues with truck off-tracking from the interstate into roadside equipment, such as signal poles, storm intakes, and other infrastructure that was being damaged.
