Marion Central Corridor Project, Phase 1

CLIENT: CITY OF MARION

Project Description: This is the first of five planned construction phases for the Marion Central Corridor Project. This project is all about creating a unique sense of place in the context of Marion’s historic uptown. This Cultural & Entertainment District and Main Street District is home to a diverse mix of commercial and residential users. The project also runs adjacent to Marion City Park, a location that hosts live music, art festivals, and a farmer’s market throughout the summer months.  A high level of design consideration was placed on creating public gathering places that accommodate the unique uses of the space.

The project included the installation of 6th Avenue in the heart of Marion’s Central Business District. Other improvements included a multi-use trail, pedestrian accommodations, and streetscaping.  Significant improvements to the storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and water mains were also included in this project.

This project not only sets a new vision for uptown redevelopment, but incorporates a series of sustainable design principles including:

  • Stormwater infiltration beds designed to reduce street runoff, improve the quality of water entering the storm sewer system, and provide an aesthetic improvement with low maintenance plantings.
  • Comprehensive landscaping plan included 112 new trees and 317 shrubs.
  • LED fixtures for roadway and pedestrian lighting.
  • 20 amp and 50 amp receptacles in festival area to reduce need for long extension cords and generators during summer events.

Anderson Bogert maintained a project website at www.marioncentralcorridor.com and managed a variety of public involvement strategies including: Facebook, YouTube channel, website, online polling, weekly email updates, and live web cams.
