Grant Wood Trail, US 151 & IA 13 to Oxley Road

LOCATION: US 151 & IA 12 to Oxley Road

CLIENT: Linn County Conservation

SUMMARY: This project involved improvements of a multi-use recreational trail including a 0.4-mile hard surface upgrade and a 2.8-mile crushed limestone trail with an adjacent turf grass trail for runners and equestrian. The project upgraded an existing gravel/grass trail from the tunnel at IA 13 to Oxley Road in Linn County. The paved portion connects with the trail head parking at 62nd Street and Waldo’s Rock Park in Marion. The project was designed to address drainage issues and setup the crushed limestone segment for future paving. Project components included removal of undesirable tree species and planting of more hardy trees, new culverts, adjustments to trail and drainage ditch profiles, sealcoating of the Hindman Road crossing for trail user dust control, accommodations for farm land access and crossings, and erosion control and restoration. The project was partially funded by a federal Transportation Alternative Program grant through the Iowa DOT.

Construction has been completed and the trail was open to the public in the Spring of 2019. This trail segment connects with the recently completed Grant Wood Trail segment west of IA 13 into Marion, which was also designed by Anderson Bogert.
