University of Iowa – Lot 74 Reconstruction

LOCATION: University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa

CLIENT: University of Iowa

PROJECT SUMMARY:

In 2021, the University of Iowa decided to reconstruct the majority of the parking lot at the Ray B. Mossman Services building, after originally only planning to complete an asphalt overlay back in 2016. The decision for continued use of the aging adjacent building was the main driver for the project, and very poor pavement conditions called for full reconstruction of about 6,000 square yards of pavement. Anderson Bogert designed the plans for the reconstruction of the lot, which included a 10” thick concrete pavement section to be able to handle the constant usage by semis and other large delivery vehicles. Anderson-Bogert’s phasing plan allowed the loading docks to remain open during the duration of construction.

The project also replaced the existing storm sewer and intakes within the lot, added new storm sewer to direct stormwater off- site, repaired the asphalt of the northwestern part of the lot with patching, crack seal, and seal coat, and provided a lighting upgrade to meet University standards. As a part of the project, Select Structural designed the replacement of the building’s loading dock equipment and repair of the building’s canopy columns, with the assistance of KF Engineering on electrical for the dock leveling equipment. Anderson Bogert was also assisted by Shive-Hattery on the stormwater pollution prevention plan (SWPPP), and All American Concrete, Inc. completed the construction of the project.
